Amazing Dubai

After 7 hours flight we arrived in hyper modern Dubai. Already on the way out of the airport you get this impression of luxury and 1001 Arabian night feel! I possibly never have seen such a beautiful and stylish airport. Big halls with a massive waterfall, luxury material used to build this airport. Hyper modern and super clean – impressive! 

In the metro towards the city we felt like in a space shuttle and the stations were announced in Arabic and in English (luckily ;-)). We passed all this high raising buildings and it seemed they were kissing the sky. After 30 minutes we arrived at the station were our friends were already waiting for us. 

What a shock of temperature: We boarded Manchester with 12 degrees in the morning and stepped out at 22.30 in Dubai with 28 degrees. The short walk to our friend’s apartment was hot and we were very thankful for the lovely cold beer on their terrace when we arrived. What lovely to see them after all these years again.

After having a very good night sleep we started our first day in Dubai very lazy and a super delicious French breakfast near the beach. With a full stomach we went to the beach and enjoyed the turquoise blue sea and white sand beach before we went back to the Pool. Super lazy. 

In the late afternoon we travelled to the Mall of Emirates which is one more time the superlative of the superlative. We went to the salt water aquarium (32.88m w, 8.3m h and 10 million liter tank and home to 33’000 marine animals). As far you can see – water, fishes, sharks, morays, snakes and so on and all that in a shopping center – fascinating!!!

Of course we had to see the 22’500 m2 ski slopes too! Covert with real snow and 85m height it was funny to see the people inside with ski gear, gloves and woolly heats. In a bar next door you can observe the people on the slopes through a big window where I possibly drank my dearest glass of wine ever!!!!

We had a lovely walk through a Mediterranean feel like outside area, had a look at a stunning Souq with amazing Arabic handicraft, crossed bridges and had a stroll along the waterfront. It could have been anywhere in south of Europe if when this building wouldn’t have been there. Burj Khalifa – sparkling with the Arabic music of the water play. The highest building in the world (828m high with 160 floors, 30’000 apartments, 9 hotels and 3h of parking space!).Being at the end of Burj Khalifa, you hardly can see the end of the building.

After a nice Italian meal and a super lovely day, we just hit the bed and felt asleep straight away. 

Next day we drove along the coast road towards Jumeirah area where the world famous Burj Al Arab hotel is located in the form of a sailing boat. Once more a dream world built into the desert of water, canals, beautiful Arabic style building with a touch of Florence! 

Strolling along the water and restaurant in 37 degrees we need desperately a cool drink in one of these lovely restaurants. What else do you want from life? Sitting in a stunning location under an umbrella, sipping on a fruit juice and a fan blowing a cooling breeze towards us!

Before heading to the Deira area in the evening we relaxed a few minutes at the pool. 

Long before it began conquering the desert and the ocean, Dubai centred around the Creek, a 15km inlet that runs through the centre of town. Deira and Bur Dubai hug either side of the Creek and remain the heart and soul of the city. That’s the real life of Dubai.

We wondered how the dhows manage to stay afloat when there are several cars, a truck, and a warehouse’s worth of electrical goods on deck! After having a boat trip on the Creek along the dhows which are converted into Restaurants we had a stroll through the Spice and Gold Souq. Soaking up the thrilling atmosphere from the shops selling all kind of goods, the smell of the spices displayed in huge bags, the colors and the music.

With a one minute ferry we crossed from the Old Souq to the Textile Souq. Absolutely fascinating to see the 1001 Arabian Night architecture, the mix of antique and modern, beautifully realized. Our trip ended at the Dubai Museum. This low-key museum tells the Dubai story with minimal fuss and plenty of charm.

Hungry from the day we went to a Lebanese Restaurant, sitting outside with mild temperatures and watching the Emirates showing off their cars and cruising along the promenade. 

The vast majorities have a lot of faith in their leaders and appreciate the perks they receive: free health care, education, land, zero-interest loans and marriage funds. There is also a debate about whether the Emiratis’ heritage (local Emiratis make up around 5% of the city’s population) and traditions are endangered as the city becomes increasingly multicultural, or if being a minority helps reinforce Emiratis’ sense of identity; many display their roots, wearing national dress such as hijabs and abayas with pride.

We couldn’t have started our holiday better than that and we are happy for the experience and most of all – to see our friends again!

Nach 7 Stunden Flugzeit sind wir in der hyper Metropole Dubai gestrandet. Bereits auf dem Weg zur Immigration kriegt man einen Vorgeschmack von 1001 Nacht und Futurama zur gleichen Zeit. Ich habe wohl noch nie so einen geschmacksvollen und impressiven Flughafen gesehen wie Dubai. Massive Hallen mit edlen Materialen, ueberdimensionale Wasserspielen. Super modern und spiegelblank – beeindruckend.

In der Metro, Richtung City, fuehlt man sich wie in einem Spaceshuttle und die Haltestellen werden in Arabisch sowie in Englisch angekuendigt. Nach 30 Minuten Fahrtszeit, entlang der hyper modernen und Himmel kuessenden Hochhaeusern, sind wir angekommen und unsere Freunde erwarten uns an der Station. 

Aus den klimatisierten Hallen in die Wirklichkeit – es hat uns fast erschlagen. Sind wir doch in Manchester mit 12 Grad in den Flieger gestiegen und kommen in Dubai um 22.30 Uhr mit 28 Graden an. Der kurze Marsch zur deren Wohnung in der Dubai Marina ist schweiss treibend aber das kuehle Bier auf dem Balkon und ein guter Schwatz mit Freunden bis tief in die Nacht machten die paar Schweisstropfen 1000 Mal wett.

Am naechsten Tag sind wir es easy angegangen und laeuteten den Tag mit einem super leckeren franzoesischen Fruehstueck in der Naehe von der Beach ein. Danach sind wir etwas am tuerkis blauen Meer gesessen, etwas am Pool gelegen und am spaeteren Nachmittag ging es in die Mall of Emirates. 

Wiederum die Superlative der Superlative. Ein Salzwasser Aquarium von ca. 32.88m Breite, 8.3 m Hoehe, 10 Millionen Liter Wassertank und ein Heim fuer ca. 33‘000 Meerestiere wie z.B. mit Haien, Rochen, Moraenen etc.! Ein Aquarium.soweit das Auge reicht inmitten eines Shoppingcenters! Danach mussten wir natuerlich noch die Schneepisten anschauen gehen mit einer Rodelbahn und typisch europaeischen Holzhaeusern und Menschen hinter dem Glas mit Muetzen, Handschuhen und Skianzuegen (22‘000m2 Schneeflaeche). In einer der Bars, wo man das Ganze beobachten kann, habe ich wohl mein teuerstes Glas Wein meines Lebens getrunken!!!

Ein Spaziergang in der Aussenwelt, natuerlich alles kuenstlich angelegt, schlenderten wir durch wunderschoene Souq mit traumhaften Arabischen Guetern, ueber Bruecken, Promenaden dem Wasserspiel entlang. Es haette irgendwo am Mittelmeer sein koennen waere da nicht dieses impulsante Gebaeude gewesen. Burj Khalifa – glitzernd zum Wasserspiel und arabischen Klaengen, das hoechste Gebaeude der Welt (828m hoch mit 160 Etagen, 30‘000 Wohnungen, 9 Hotels und 3 h Parkplatzflaeche!) und wenn man am Fusse dessen steht, kann man kaum das Ende sehen!

Nach einem leckeren italienischen Nachtessen und einem super schoenen Tag, sind wir todmuede ins Bett gefallen.

Am naechsten Tag ging es der Kuestenstrasse entlang in das Jumeirah Quartier, wo das weltberuehmte Hotel Burj Al Arab steht in der Form eines Segelbootes. Auch hier wieder, eine Traumwelt von Wasser, arabischer Architektur und Mittelmeer Flair aus dem Wuestenboden gestampft. Wir schlenderten in bruetender Hitze den Ufern entlang, Palmen und Restaurants rundeten das Bild von kuenstlich Venezia ab. Ein kuehler Saft und einige Minuten unter einem Sonnenschirm und einem Riesenfan, welcher eine Brise zu uns luftet. Was will man mehr vom Leben?

Wiederum goennten wir uns einige Stunden am Pool, etwas abkuehlen und ausspannen bevor wir am Abend nach Deira gingen. Anno dazumal konzentrierte sich Dubai ca. 15 km um den Creek. Hier, wo Dubai entstanden ist und von wo aus es gewachsen ist.

Alte hoelzerne Frachtboote entlang den Ufern, einige davon in Restaurants umgewandelt und andere immer noch im Dienst der Fracht. Nach einem Bootstrip auf dem Creek, schlenderten wir in der Altstadt herum, besuchten den Gold und Spice Souq und saugten das lebhafte Hafentreiben auf. Eine komplett andere Welt und man koennte hier leicht in einen Kaufrausch geraten. Riesen Saecke voll Gewuerzen in den verschiedensten Farben und Geruechen, Kleider von typisch Arabisch und Western, Haushaltsartikel von A-Z, Schmucklaeden und natuerlich duerfen die Touristen nicht fehlen.

Mit einer Faehre ueberquerten wir vom Old Souq zum Textil Souq. Absoult faszinierende 1001 Nacht Architektur mit einem Mix von der Moderne – traumhaft und stilvoll realisiert. Unsere Entdeckungsreise durch Dubai rundeten wir mit einem Museumbesuch ab, welches die Geschichte von Dubai sehr einfach aber eindruecklich illustriert.

Hungrig vom Tag gingen wir Libanesisch essen, sassen draussen bei milden Temperaturen und einer leichten Brise, schauten dem lebhaften Treiben auf den Strassen zu und wie die Emirates ihre Riesenkutschen auf dem Boulevard zur Schau stellen.

Die Mehrheit der Emirates stehen zu ihren „Leaders“ und schaetzen die „goodies“, welche sie von ihnen erhalten w.Z. kostenlose Arztbehandlung sowie Ausbildung, Land, 0% Zins auf Krediten und einen Hochzeits Fond. Anscheinend machen die Emirates gerade einmal 5% der Bevoelkerung von Dubai aus und Debatten werde gefuehrt, ob sie ihre Herkunft verlieren in einer immer mehr wachsenden multikulturalen Stadt oder ob sie das Gefuehl als Minderheit eher staerkt im Sinne von Identitaet. Viele von ihnen zeigen ihre Wurzeln indem sie ihre nationalen Kleider (Hijabs und Abayas) mit Stolz tragen.

Wir haetten unsere Ferien nicht besser starten koennen und sind gluecklich, unsere Freunde wieder einmal sehen und diese Erfahrung gemacht zu haben!
